Shelby County is located in central Indiana, bordered on the north by Hancock County, to the east by Rush County, to the southeast by Decatur County, to the south by Bartholomew County, to the west by Johnson County, and to the northwest by Marion County.
It has an area of 409 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 43,445 residents.
Shelbyville (2000 Census population of 17,951) is both the largest city in Shelby County and the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Morristown (1,133), St. Paul (1,022), and Mount Auburn (75).
The county was named for Isaac Shelby, who fought in the American Revolution and the War of 1812; he was also Governor of Kentucky.
Notable natives include race car driver Wilbur Shaw and actress Marjorie Main (Ma Kettle).
