    Counties: Posey County Indiana


Posey County is located in extreme southwestern Indiana, bordered on the north by Gibson County, to the east by Vanderburgh County, to the south by Kentucky, and to the west by Illinois.

It has an area of 409 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 27,061 residents.

Mount Vernon (2000 Census population of 7,478) is both the largest city in Posey County and the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include Poseyville (1,187), New Harmony (916), Cynthiana (693), and Griffin (160).

The county was named for Indiana Territory Governor General Thomas Posey.

Notable natives include Alvin Handley, 20th Governor of Indiana.
