Jefferson County is located in southeastern Indiana, bordered on the north by Jennings and Ripley counties, to the east by Switzerland County, to the south by Kentucky, and to the west by Clark and Scott counties.
It has an area of 361 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 31,705 residents.
Madison (2000 Census population of 12,004) is both the largest city in Jefferson County and the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Hanover (2,834) and Dupont (392).
The county was named for Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States.
