Hamilton County is located in central Indiana, bordered on the north by Tipton County, to the east by Madison County, to the southeast by Hancock County, to the south by Marion County, and to the west by Boone County, and to the northwest by Clinton County.
It has an area of 398 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 182,740 residents.
Fishers (2000 Census population of 37,835) is the largest city in Hamilton County. Noblesville (28,590) is the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Carmel (37,733), Westfield (9,293), Cicero (4,303), Sheridan (2,520), Arcadia (1,747), and Atlanta (761).
The county was named for Alexander Hamilton, signer of the Declaration of Independence and first Secretary of the United States Treasury.
Notable natives include mystery writer Rex Stout.
